I've appointed Rory Palmer as my deputy, and the following councillors as Assistant City Mayor:
-
Piara Singh Clair
-
Andy Connelly
-
Vi Dempster
-
Sarah Russell
-
Rita Patel
-
Manjula Sood.
My responsibilities
I've taken on all key decision-making responsibilities of our council's previous cabinet team. Meaning I have responsibility for running the city council and making decisions on how we deliver our services.
However, I cannot set the council’s annual budget (still done by full council). Nor can I make any decisions on licensing or planning issues.
My priorities
Supported by my Executive team, I'm working to lead our city into a new and exciting era.
My team's priorities for Leicester are:
-
An accountable, democratic and strong Council
-
Leicester: a place to do business
-
Leicester: a low carbon city
-
Our neighbourhoods and communities - people, culture and leisure
-
Getting about in Leicester
-
Leicester: a healthy and active city
-
Our children and young people
-
The built and natural environment around us in Leicester.
Who does what in my Executive team?
I'll lead on all matters of constitution and governance, emergency planning and resilience and the council's new responsibilities for health and wellbeing.
Currently, I also lead on economic development, heritage, transport and regeneration.
Councillor Rory Palmer deputises for me, and has responsibilities for climate change and public health, which is linked to his work on child poverty.
My other team members' responsibilities are below:
- Councillor Piara Singh Clair leads on culture, leisure and sport
- Councillor Andy Connelly leads on housing
- Councillor Vi Dempster has responsibility for children, young people and schools
- Councillor Rita Patel leads on adult social care
- Councillor Manjula Sood oversees community involvement
- Councillor Sarah Russell has responsibility for neighbourhood services.
Job descriptions for my team
Job descriptions have been published for my role, the role of Deputy City Mayor, and the roles of Assistant Mayor and Councillors. These can be downloaded at leicester.gov.uk/citymayorjobdescriptions.
These will hopefully help the public to understand what to expect of their locally elected politicians, and the standards by which they can be held to account and judged.
A new style of Executive meetings
I want my Executive team meetings to be open to all so you can question my team on those things that matter to you.
Our meetings will also highlight what areas of work we're looking at so you can get involved before any final decisions are made.
Our next meeting is at 4.30pm on 18th April 2013 at Leicester Town Hall. We'll be tweeting updates as we've done before.
You can watch webcasts of past cabinet meetings and view archived council meetings on our webcasting website.
