I've appointed Rory Palmer as my deputy, and the following councillors as assistant city mayor:
-
Piara Singh Clair
-
Mohammed Dawood
-
Vi Dempster
-
Sarah Russell
-
Manjula Sood.
My responsibilities
I've taken on all key decision-making responsibilities of our council's previous cabinet team. Meaning I have responsibility for running the city council and making decisions on how we deliver our services.
However, I cannot set the council’s annual budget (still to be done at by full council). Nor can I make any decisions on licensing or planning issues.
My priorities
Supported by my Executive team, I'm working to lead our city into a new and exciting era.
My team's priorities for Leicester are:
-
An accountable, democratic and strong Council
-
Leicester: a place to do business
-
Leicester: a low carbon city
-
Our neighbourhoods and communities - people, culture and leisure
-
Getting about in Leicester
-
Leicester: a healthy and active city
-
Our children and young people
-
The built and natural environment around us in Leicester.
Who does what in my Executive team?
I'll lead on all matters of constitution and governance, emergency planning and resilience and the council's new responsibilities for health and wellbeing. Currently, I also lead on economic development.
Councillor Rory Palmer deputises for myself, and has responsibilities for transport and climate change matters.
My other team members' responsibilities are below:
- Councillor Mohammed Dawood leads on adult social care and housing
- Councillor Vi Dempster has responsibility for children, young people and schools.
- Councillor Manjula Sood oversees health and community involvement.
- Councillor Piara Singh Clair leads on culture, heritage, leisure and sport.
- Councillor Sarah Russell has responsibility for neighbourhood services.
Letters setting out the responsibilities and areas of work for each of my team's portfolios can be downloaded below.
Job descriptions for my team
One of my 100 Days Programme tasks for senior council staff was to publish job descriptions for myself, Deputy City Mayor, Assistant Mayor and Councillors.
These will hopefully help the public to understand what to expect of their locally elected politicians, and the standards by which they can be held to account and judged.
Draft job descriptions for my team and I can be downloaded at leicester.gov.uk/citymayorjobdescriptions.
The job descriptions are all works in progress. Final versions will be available here to download in upcoming months.
A new style of Executive meetings
I want my Executive team meetings to be open to all so you can question my team on those things that matter to you.
Our meetings will also highlight what areas of work we're looking at so you can get involved before any final decisions are made.
We had our last meeting on Monday 14th May 2012 at Leicester Town Hall. Our next Executive team meeting will be confirmed soon.
You can watch webcasts of past cabinet meetings and view archived council meetings on our webcasting website.
100 Days Programme
Our 100 days Programme set out some of our immediate priorities for action. My team and I have been working from day one on the priorities above, and how we can address the tough challenges facing Leicester.
You can download your PDF copy of our final report below. You'll need Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded from the Adobe website*.
Or read our
electronic magazine version, which requires Flash Player plug-in software (also available from the
Adobe website*).
